Paul Evans
Artist statement

Paul Evans is one of the leading Landscape Painters working today.

He is widely known for his highly individual watercolours, acrylics and etchings inspired by East Anglia's landscape and coast, Sussex Downland, the Kent weald and Cornwall's rugged coast and moorland. His painting explores only a few locations in detail through all times of the year to convey a deep sense of place. He constantly experiments with techniques and materials - finding new ways to reflect the changing light and seasons in his work.

Paul studied illustration and printmaking for four years between 1972 and 1976 at Eastbourne College of Art and Design, and has been fortunate to make his living solely from his painting since graduating. He started to show his work at The Ralph Lewis Gallery in Brighton's Lanes and immediately started to sell everything that he could paint.

Since 1976 Paul has had over 65 solo Exhibitions and numerous group shows, usually attended by large numbers of collectors, quite often selling out within hours of the opening.

Over 400 images have been used for greetings cards, calendars and Limited Edition Prints with several large publishers including Rosenstiel's, Kingsmead Publications, Royle Publications, Royal Doulton and Georgian House.

Work has been bought by collectors and buyers worldwide - America, Japan, Australia and Europe - as well as by a large and loyal following closer to home.

There was never any doubt about Paul's career path. As a small boy he would walk the South Downs with his father, Bill, listening to birdsong and being encouraged to look at the world with his own eyes and with attention to detail.

He learnt to observe nature in all its forms, relishing every sight and sound so that he could then portray these senses onto paper with such extraordinary accuracy that one can almost taste the scented air and feel the prickle of the teazle heads.

Paul lives and breathes the countryside and coast that he loves and knows so well, constantly finding inspiration in walking the lanes and shores throughout the seasons. His ability to depict light in his paintings is exquisite and mesmerising, and brings an elusive and unique quality to his work.
